Matthias Willmann’s research group focuses on intelligent surveillance and intervention strategies for the prevention and further spread of multidrug-resistant pathogens in hospitals. The scientists combine modern molecular epidemiology techniques, such as “next generation sequencing”, with clinical epidemiology tools and mathematical modelling. In this way, they develop methods to recognise pathogen transmission pathways on time and hence stop their spread if necessary. DNA from approximately 800 strains is being extracted for genome analysis for a study on Pseudomonas aeruginosa, a dreaded hospital pathogen. Based on the data, scientists hope to gain insight into specific genes that make this superbug so dangerous and what facilitates its spread.
