Organisation and Bodies

All 35 DZIF partner institutions are members of DZIF e.V. (eingetragener Verein, registered association) under German Law. The General Assembly (GA) and the Executive Board are mandatory bodies of DZIF according to German law. Further Bodies of DZIF are the Commission of the Funding Authorities (CFA) and the Scientific Advisory Board (SAB) as well as the Internal Advisory Board (IAB). The Main Office, located at the Helmholtz Centre for Infection Research, is responsible for managing and coordinating all research funding procedures and organises General Assembly meetings, reportings and review procedures. Moreover it coordinates DZIF’s press and public relations activities.

General Assembly

The General Assembly is the central decision-making organ of the DZIF and comprises representatives of the DZIF member institutions. The General Assembly elects the Executive Board members and the Executive Director, and decides on the allocation of funds to the research fields and infrastructures on the basis of proposals from the Executive Board.

Executive Board

The Executive Director and the Executive Board are elected by the General Assembly. The Executive Board is responsible for all aspects of governance and management. It comprises of the Scientific Director of the Helmholtz Centre for Infection Research, and two to four further members elected by the General Assembly.

Commission of Funding Authorities

The Commission of Funding Authorities oversees DZIF's cooperation with the funding authorities. Funding authorities are the federal government (Bundesministerium für Bildung und Forschung, Federal Ministry of Education and Research, BMBF) (90 %) and the respective state (Land), in which a funded institution is located (10 %). The BMBF and the federal states each send a representative to the Commission of Funding Authorities, which is chaired by the representative of the federal government. The Executive Director and the Managing Director report to the commission on all general funding issues.

Scientific Advisory Board

DZIF is supported by an external Scientific Advisory Board consisting of internationally renowned experts in the field of infection research. The external Scientific Advisory Board consists of up to 12 persons from academia and industry. They are appointed for a term of four years by the General Assembly on recommendation by the Executive Board. The Scientific Advisory Board meets at least once per year and advises the Executive Board and the General Assembly on all scientific and programmatic issues.

Main Office

The Managing Director heads the Main Office of DZIF, located in Braunschweig. The staff support the Board of Directors in its work. The tasks of the Managing Director and the Main Office staff include organising the research initiatives to be implemented in the coming years as well as the press and public relations work of DZIF. Seven site managers at the partner sites support and coordinate the collaboration with the Main Office.

The members of the Internal Advisory Board are DZIF scientists representing all research fields and locations of the centre. The council advises the Executive Board on all scientific, programme-related and technical matters and performs representative duties.

Funding Management

The Funding Management (FMM) is located at the Helmholtz Centre for Infection Research in Braunschweig. The FMM forwards he Federal funds based on the BMBF funding agreement to the partner institutes to support their projects. The main tasks of the FMM include the administrative approval of projects, supporting the realisation of the project and auditing the use of funds.
