The DZIF partner site Munich is represented by Technische Universität München, Ludwig-Maximilians-Universität München, Klinikum der Universität München, Klinikum rechts der Isar of TUM, Helmholtz Zentrum München – German Research Center for Environmental Health, and the Bundeswehr Institute of Microbiology. These six institutions strengthen the German Centre for Infection Research with their long-standing experience and expertise in the field of infection research and therapy development. The Munich researchers are especially focussed on the 'immune control of infections'. The increasing development of resistances to currently available anti-infectives (experts are already calling it the "post-antibiotic era") demands the search for new therapeutic methods. The field of immunotherapy offers promising new approaches in this respect: Pathogen-specific immunotherapies (prophylactic or therapeutic) aim at strengthening the body's natural defence system, so that it can control specific infectious diseases more effectively or even avoid them entirely. Resistance-selection can be kept low and, given high pathogen-specificity, the normal flora (microbiome) remains intact. DZIF will be identifying the corresponding target structures for infection therapy and testing them in the first clinical studies in people. New junior research groups, technology platforms, national and international clinical study centres and the DZIF Academy as a training centre for young researchers and doctors all add up into an ideal, innovative infrastructure for the field of infection research.
