The German Society for Crystallography has awarded the Carl-Hermann-Medal to the biochemist Prof. Rolf Hilgenfeld. The award honours the scientific life of outstanding research personalities in the field of crystallography in the broadest sense. The DZIF scientist Hilgenfeld receives the medal in particular for his achievements in the field of crystallography of viral proteins.

In 2020, the research group of Prof. Rolf Hilgenfeld at the University of Lübeck elucidated the crystal structure of the main protease of the coronavirus SARS-CoV-2. Knowledge of these structures now forms the basis for the further development of these compounds into antiviral drugs.

Prof. Rolf Hilgenfeld is an internationally renowned biochemist and structural virologist. He was director of the Institute of Biochemistry at the University of Lübeck from 2003 to 2020 and now holds a senior professorship at the Institute of Molecular Medicine.

The medal was presented to him along with a certificate on March 27, 2023, at the annual meeting of the German Society for Crystallography in Frankfurt.
