Short description

Acinetobacter is a genus of Gram-negative bacteria. Acinetobacter baumannii, in particular, can cause healthcare-associated infections and may be difficult to treat due to antibiotic resistance.

Detailed description

Acinetobacter species are found in the environment as well as on human skin and mucous membranes. Some species can cause healthcare-associated infections, particularly in critically ill or immunocompromised people. These include pneumonia, wound infections, and bloodstream infections. Acinetobacter baumannii is of particular medical importance. Some strains are resistant to multiple classes of antibiotics, making infections difficult to treat. According to the World Health Organization (WHO), carbapenem-resistant A. baumannii is among the antibiotic-resistant pathogens of greatest global concern.
