Short description

In droplet infection, pathogens are spread via larger liquid droplets, such as those produced when coughing, that come into contact with another person’s mucous membranes.

Detailed description

When breathing, speaking, coughing, or sneezing, respiratory particles of various sizes are released. Larger droplets primarily reach the mucous membranes of the mouth, nose, or eyes over short distances and can transmit pathogens in the process.

Various respiratory pathogens can be transmitted this way, such as influenza and rhinoviruses, as well as the bacteria that cause whooping cough. Many pathogens can be transmitted both via larger droplets and via smaller particles that remain suspended in the air for longer periods.
