Detailed description

Fecal microbiota transplantation (FMT), also known as stool transplantation, is used in particular to treat recurrent infections with Clostridioides difficile. In this procedure, carefully screened donor stool is processed, and the microbiota it contains is transferred to the patient, for example via the gastrointestinal tract or in the form of capsules. The goal is to restore a disrupted gut microbiome to a more favorable balance and to suppress the proliferation of C. difficile. Due to the potential transmission of pathogens, careful selection and screening of donors, as well as controlled manufacturing and administration procedures, are required.
