Genome Mining
Genome mining refers to the targeted search of genomic data for genes or gene clusters that provide clues about specific biological properties or potential bioactive compounds.
Detailed description
In bacteria, for example, genome mining is used to identify so-called biosynthetic gene clusters. These contain the genetic information for the production of certain natural products, including substances of potential medical interest.
Using bioinformatics methods, such gene clusters can be predicted within the genome and investigated in a targeted manner. This approach also makes it possible to detect natural products that are produced only in small quantities, or not at all, under standard laboratory conditions and are therefore difficult to discover using conventional methods.
