MRSA are Staphylococcus-aureus strains that are resistant against all available beta-lactam antibiotics.

Detailed description

MRSA usually cause wound infections and inflammations of the airways. Initially, they were mainly observed in hospitals. Today, they are also found outside of hospitals, in food, livestock and the environment. Beta-lactam antibiotics such as penicillin are not effective against them anymore. Usually, these strains are multidrug-resistant and thus not sensitive to other antibiotic classes. A small proportion of the population is colonized with MRSA, without having fallen ill yet.
