Viremia refers to the presence of viruses in the blood. Viruses can spread throughout the body via the bloodstream and reach other organs or tissues.

Detailed description

In some viral infections, viruses enter the bloodstream from the original site of infection and can thus spread throughout the body. The duration and severity of viremia can vary.

For certain infections, a distinction is made between primary and secondary viremia. Primary viremia occurs when viruses first enter the bloodstream from the site of infection. If they subsequently multiply in other tissues and re-enter the bloodstream, this is referred to as secondary viremia.
