European Molecular Biology Laboratory (EMBL) in Heidelberg

Three associated partner institutions complement DZIF with their specific scientific expertise. While not formal member institutions, they are integrated into the research network and benefit from selected DZIF programs and infrastructures.

The European Molecular Biology Laboratory (EMBL) in Heidelberg is internationally recognized for its expertise in microbiome research, metabolism, and computational biology. Together with the DZIF, EMBL helps translate discoveries from basic research into medical applications, particularly in the field of microbiome-associated infectious diseases.

A key element of this collaboration is the Molecular Medicine Partnership Unit (MMPU), a joint initiative of EMBL and the Medical Faculties of Heidelberg and Mannheim. Here, basic scientists and clinician-scientists lead joint research groups to advance innovative approaches to the diagnosis, prevention, and treatment of infectious diseases while training the next generation of translational researchers.
