Prof. Christoph Lange awarded the 2025 Oskar Medical Prize

Prof. Christoph Lange, Head of the Clinical Tuberculosis Infrastructure at the German Center for Infection Research (DZIF) and Medical Director of the Borstel Research Center, Leibniz Lung Center, has been awarded the 2025 Oskar Medical Prize by the Oskar-Helene-Heim Foundation. The prize, endowed with 50,000 euros, is one of the most highly endowed medical prizes in Germany.

The official award ceremony and tribute to the laureate took place on March 20, 2026, in cooperation with the German Society for Pneumology and Respiratory Medicine (DGP) as part of the DGP Congress in Munich. The award was presented by the Chairman of the Board of Trustees of the Oskar-Helene-Heim Foundation, Prof. Dr. Wolfgang Kuhla. The laudatory address was delivered by the Secretary General of the German Central Committee for the Control of Tuberculosis, Prof. Dr. Torsten Bauer.

The Berlin-based Oskar-Helene-Heim Foundation, established under civil law, promotes science and research in various fields of medicine. As part of a special funding initiative, the Foundation awards the Oskar Medical Prize annually. This medical prize is intended to recognize outstanding scientific achievements in 2025 and to support the continuation of research in the field of internal medicine/pneumology focusing on infections of the lungs and pleura.

Upon the jury’s recommendation, the 2025 Oskar Medical Prize is awarded to Prof. Dr. med. Dr. h.c. Christoph Lange, Medical Director of the Borstel Research Center, Leibniz Lung Center, Professor of Respiratory Medicine & International Health at the University of Lübeck, and researcher at the DZIF, for his outstanding, groundbreaking scientific and clinical work on tuberculosis.

About the Award Recipient, Univ.-Prof. Dr. med. Dr. h.c. Christoph Lange

Christoph Lange is a pulmonologist and ranks among the world’s leading experts in lung diseases and infectious medicine. His research focuses on the epidemiology, prevention, diagnosis, and treatment of tuberculosis, particularly multidrug-resistant tuberculosis (MDR-TB) and nontuberculous mycobacteria (NTM).

Christoph Lange is Medical Director of the Borstel Research Center, Leibniz Lung Center, and Professor of Respiratory Medicine & International Health at the University of Lübeck. He is also Head of the Clinical Tuberculosis Infrastructure (ClinTB) at the German Center for Infection Research (DZIF) and one of the clinical leaders of the EU-IMI project UNITE4TB, a multinational platform for clinical trials evaluating novel drugs against tuberculosis. Christoph Lange is also the founding chair of the Tuberculosis Network European Trials Group (www.tbnet.eu) and currently serves as Director and Secretary General of the International Union Against Tuberculosis and Lung Disease (https://theunion.org).
