“The DZIF particularly stands out as an institution that offers junior researchers a wealth of possibilities to build up their own networks and initiate projects themselves,” says Janne Vehreschild (35).

Since July 2013, he has been leader of the DZIF’s Junior Research Group “Cohort Studies in HIV Infection” based at the University Hospital of Cologne. Janne Vehreschild’s group tries to network HIV research at the different DZIF sites, build up a communal biobank and integrate this into the central DZIF biobanking infrastructure. Aim is to facilitate quick and uncomplicated implementation of translational research across all sites.

Janne’s wife, Maria Vehreschild (34), also found her place at the DZIF: At the Thematic Translational Unit (TTU) “Healthcare associated and Antibiotic-resistant Bacterial Infections”, where she heads two clinical studies as principal investigator and coordinator. After her parental leave, Maria Vehreschild benefited from a special scholarship for mothers, which can be applied for at the DZIF Academy. The application procedure is straightforward and uncomplicated. With this sponsorship she has the opportunity to concentrate more intensively on research and be less involved as a physician in direct patient care. The program runs for one year: The DZIF finances 50 percent of her position and the hospital the other half.
