Short description
Beta-lactamase is an enzyme produced by bacteria, which protects them against the effect of beta-lactam antibiotics.

  Detailed description
By making beta-lactam antibiotics ineffective, beta-lactamases contribute to the development of antibiotic resistances and to the emergence of multidrug-resistant pathogens. Beta-lactam antibiotics are, for example, penicillins and cephalosporins.
