Beta-lactamases break down the beta-lactam ring of certain beta-lactam antibiotics, which can confer antibiotic resistance to bacteria. Which antibiotics become ineffective depends on the specific beta-lactamase. Beta-lactam antibiotics include, among others, penicillins, cephalosporins, carbapenems, and monobactams. Some beta-lactamases, known as ESBLs (extended-spectrum beta-lactamases), can break down a broad range of penicillins and cephalosporins. Carbapenemases can also render carbapenems ineffective.
