Community-acquired infections are infections contracted outside of hospitals or other medical facilities.

Detailed description

Community-acquired infections occur outside of inpatient medical care and are distinguished from nosocomial infections, which are acquired in connection with a stay or treatment at a medical facility. Typical examples include community-acquired respiratory, urinary tract, or gastrointestinal infections. This distinction can be important for diagnosis and the selection of an appropriate treatment, as, for example, the expected pathogens and their antibiotic resistance profiles may differ.
