CLASTER: Clinical and Ambulant Study Center
The Clinical and Ambulant Study Center (CLASTER) supports the planning and implementation of clinical and epidemiological studies within the DZIF research area "Community-Acquired Infections at Mucosal Interfaces". Its mission is to accelerate the translation of discoveries from basic research into clinical practice, ultimately improving the diagnosis, prevention, and treatment of infectious diseases. Clinical studies are essential for evidence-based medical decision-making. At the same time, the regulatory and organizational requirements for conducting such studies are becoming increasingly complex. CLASTER provides a shared infrastructure across participating DZIF partner sites, supporting researchers throughout the entire study process—from study design and participant recruitment to the collection and management of clinical data.
A particular focus of CLASTER is on studies conducted in outpatient settings. These include research involving individuals with gastrointestinal diseases, urinary tract infections, and sexually transmitted infections. Recruiting and engaging these patient populations requires specialized approaches and efficient study organization. CLASTER develops cross-site recruitment and study strategies while building on the experience gained from previously successful research projects.
The center builds on the expertise and infrastructure of the former "Center for Gastrointestinal Clinical Trials (CEGICLIN)". Among the projects currently supported by CLASTER is the HelicoPTER study, one of the largest European investigations of Helicobacter pylori infections. Findings from this study contribute to refining treatment recommendations and improving our understanding of antibiotic resistance patterns.
At participating sites, specially trained study coordinators support the conduct of clinical research. They manage study logistics, coordinate the collection and shipment of biological samples, maintain clinical databases, and serve as points of contact for study participants. By providing this support, CLASTER creates the conditions necessary for efficient, high-quality clinical research.
As an infrastructure with extensive experience in both outpatient and clinical research, CLASTER plays a key role in enabling successful translational studies and advancing innovative approaches to patient care.
