Microbiome
Short description
The microbiome refers to the community of microorganisms and their genetic information in a specific habitat, such as the human gut.
Detailed description
The human microbiome includes, among other things, bacteria, fungi, and viruses, and varies from person to person as well as between different regions of the body. A particularly large number of microorganisms live in the gastrointestinal tract. The microbiome can influence numerous bodily functions. For example, gut bacteria are involved in metabolism and the production of certain vitamins, influence the immune system, and can help prevent the colonization of pathogens. Diet, medications, especially antibiotics, and other factors can alter the composition of the microbiome.
