Mpox
Mpox (formerly known as monkeypox) is an infectious disease caused by the mpox virus. It can cause symptoms including fever, skin and mucosal lesions, and swollen lymph nodes.
Detailed description
Human-to-human transmission occurs primarily through close physical contact with an infected person. Skin and mucosal lesions and the bodily fluids they contain are particularly infectious. Transmission can occur through skin-to-skin contact, kissing, or sexual contact, among other forms of close contact. Infectious respiratory particles during close contact and objects contaminated with the virus can also contribute to transmission.
Since 2022, mpox has spread to numerous countries outside the regions where it was previously known to occur. In many people, the disease is mild and resolves on its own within a few weeks. However, severe and, in rare cases, fatal cases can occur. People at increased risk of severe disease include those with weakened immune systems, pregnant women, and young children.
