In medical research, “translation” refers to the transfer of scientific findings into practical applications, such as new methods for the prevention, diagnosis, or treatment of diseases.
Detailed description
Translational research bridges the gap between basic research and clinical research. Findings from the laboratory are further developed and tested so that they can lead, for example, to new drugs, vaccines, or diagnostic procedures.
The exchange also works in the opposite direction: observations and questions arising from medical practice can spark new research projects. This approach is often described as “from bench to bedside and back.”
