Viral load refers to the amount of a virus or its genetic material in a specific volume of a biological sample, such as blood or plasma.

The viral load is usually determined using methods of molecular biology that measure the amount of viral DNA or RNA in a sample. Among other things, it can be used to assess the course of a viral infection and the success of antiviral therapy. The viral load plays an important role, for example, in HIV as well as in chronic infections with hepatitis B or hepatitis C viruses. The significance of the measured viral load for disease progression, infectiousness, or treatment depends on the specific virus and the sample being tested.
