Leipzig University participates in the DZIF research area Hepatitis through Prof. Dr. Florian van Bömmel as an associated partner. Within the research focus Hepatitis B – Cure, he works with scientists from various DZIF partner sites to develop new approaches aimed at curing chronic hepatitis B virus (HBV) infection.
Given the rising number of hepatitis B-related deaths worldwide, there is an urgent need for effective preventive, diagnostic, and therapeutic strategies. In addition to strengthening vaccination and diagnostic efforts, the development of curative therapies is particularly important. To this end, the research focus brings together expertise in molecular HBV research, preclinical models, basic and human immunology, and clinical research. This close interdisciplinary collaboration aims to generate new insights and harness them for the development of innovative diagnostic and therapeutic approaches. The research thereby also contributes to the UN Sustainable Development Goal ↗ SDG 3.3, which includes combating hepatitis.
Prof. van Bömmel contributes his particular expertise in clinical research on chronic hepatitis B. A key focus of his research is to determine the conditions under which a functional cure can be achieved and which patients may benefit from different treatment strategies.
