Daptomycin
Short description
Daptomycin is an antibiotic used to treat certain severe infections caused by Gram-positive bacteria, including MRSA.
Detailed description
Daptomycin is a cyclic lipopeptide antibiotic that was originally derived from a soil bacterium. It is used to treat complicated skin and soft tissue infections, as well as certain bloodstream infections and endocarditis, for example.
Daptomycin binds to the cell membrane of Gram-positive bacteria and disrupts its function. This impairs vital processes within the bacterial cell, causing the bacteria to die.
Daptomycin is not suitable for the treatment of pneumonia because it is inactivated by components of pulmonary surfactant. It is also not effective against Gram-negative bacteria.
