Enterobacteria are bacteria belonging to the family Enterobacteriaceae. They include both natural inhabitants of the gut and important pathogens.

Detailed description

Some enterobacteria are part of the normal gut microbiota of humans and animals. If they enter other parts of the body, they can cause urinary tract or bloodstream infections, for example. Other members can cause disease due to specific disease-causing properties. These include Salmonella and Shigella, as well as certain strains of Escherichia coli, which can cause gastrointestinal infections in particular. Klebsiella are also among the medically important enterobacteria.
