Viral load is the quantity of virus in a given amount of patient’s blood.
Synonyms
Virus load
Detailed description
This factor is mainly used to control the therapeutic process of infections with HIV, cytomegaly viruses, hepatitis A viruses and hepatitis B viruses. A high viral load correlates with a severe infection or a poor prognosis, respectively.
A microscopy unit was established at the Heidelberg Partner Site for research groups from the research field “Hepatitis” and other research fields including “Emerging Infections”, “Malaria and Neglected Tropical Diseases” and “HIV” in particular. The working group microscopy of hepatitis viruses ...
This research group, led by Professor Marylyn Addo, initiates and coordinates translational research in the field of emerging infections with a particular focus on Ebola, MERS, Lassa and Crimean-Congo haemorrhagic fever. Immunology studies, vaccine development, testing of novel anti-infectives and ...
Prof. Dr. Andreas Pichlmair and his team are investigating the complex interactions between viruses and the human immune system. How does the immune system respond to external attacks, and what countermeasures do the pathogens develop? Human cells have evolved sophisticated mechanisms to combat ...
When emerging viruses cause severe diseases, the rapid development of vaccines and antivirals against these pathogens becomes critical. Some newly emerging viruses are very dangerous and necessitate the highest of biosafety levels for research and development purposes. DZIF scientists have a ...
Andreas Moosmann’s research group investigates the immune system’s responses to viruses, particularly T cell responses. Widespread viruses such as the Epstein-Barr virus and the cytomegalovirus are at the core of their interest. After infecting healthy individuals, these viruses often remain in the ...
In addition to analyzing the replication mechanisms of the hepatitis B (HBV) and D (HDV) viruses, the work of Prof. Stephan Urban and his team focuses on the development of new active substances and drugs against these pathogens. With Bulevirtide (formerly Myrcludex B), which blocks the binding and ...
Professor Thomas Krey’s research group aims to determine the structures of particular viral and cellular proteins that play a key role in the processes leading to infection. Consequently, the group is particularly focussed on the use of x-ray crystallography. Information regarding the structures of ...
Mosquitoes are transmitters of numerous viruses that are pathogenic to humans. Besides the known local species, new types of mosquitoes have been imported into Germany over the past few years. In order to prepare for the potential formation of colonies of these new types of mosquitoes and the ...
The research group led by Dr. Angelika Riemer has set itself the goal of developing a functional therapeutic vaccine against human papillomavirus (HPV) infections and against HPV-induced tumors. While prophylactic vaccines induce the production of antibodies to prevent an infection with the pathogen ...
